Why the Douay-Rheims

A Catholic canon, a Catholic translation

A Catholic Bible is first a matter of canon: seventy-three books, not sixty-six. It is then a matter of translation. The Douay-Rheims was made by English Catholics in exile, from the Latin Vulgate the Church had read for a thousand years; it is the wording English-speaking Catholics heard and prayed for generations.

Reading it beneath the Latin is reading Scripture as the liturgy gives it: the psalms of the Office are those of the Vulgate, and the Epistle and the Gospel of the Mass are read in its Latin.

Its history — the exiles of Rheims and Douai, and why Catholics still read it — is told in the Douay-Rheims Bible; and the whole text can be read now on this site, chapter by chapter beside the Vulgate.
